5 Must-Watch Historical Korean Dramas Beyond ‘My Dearest’

For me, a true historical drama is incredibly special and one of the best genres of drama I’ve ever been introduced to: with intricate plotlines and memorable characters, these period dramas offer an incredible glimpse into Korea’s rich history, not to mention supernatural elements. Another example from my youth is the Korean historical comedy “My Dearest,” which has enjoyed great success in the US and remains popular among audiences.

The Joseon-era drama “Moon Embracing the Sun” features Han Ga In as Yeon Woo and Kim Soo Hyun as the Crown Prince. It is a cleverly constructed tale of political intrigue and forbidden love in ancient Korea. The story begins with shamans trying to kill king William, followed by tragic events leading up to the wedding of King Park.

The historical drama “Six Flying Dragons” starring Yoo Ah In, Kim Myung Min and Shin Se Kyung includes six key figures who played a crucial role in shaping the destiny of the Joseon dynasty.

In “Tree with Deep Roots,” Jang Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung follow in King Sejong’s footsteps as he attempts to create the Korean alphabet Hangul, intertwining an intriguing historical setting with political intrigue. The story follows two former slaves (Ddol-bok and Dam) as they attempt to stop Han script from being written by him. Tragically, both characters are revealed to be members of a secret group known as “Hidden Root”, who have no intention of altering the script.

The story of Kang-chi, a half-human, half-50-gumiho (a mythical nine-tailed fox) and his journey to become fully human in the fantasy drama “Gu Family Book,” starring Lee Seung Gi as Choi Kangg-che and Bae Suzy as Dam Yeo-Wool, is set in Xorong District’s Anonimity City. It features action, romance, and supernatural elements that create enchanting and fantastical stories with its historical events.

A charmingly funny and romantic story set in the Joseon era, “100 Days My Prince” stars Do Kyung Soo (D.O.) and Nam Ji-hyun as the crown prince who meets a strong woman during his final days of life after losing his memory in an accident.

Despite the popularity of “My Dearest,” these five historical Korean dramas have become established in television by captivating audiences with their suspenseful plots, exceptional acting by stars like Kim Soo-Hyun, Yoo Ah-in, Jang Hyuk, Lee Seung Gi, and Do Kyung-Soo, as well as stunning historical locations. Regardless of your love for politics, cultural exploration, or romantic romance, there are many historical drama options on this list.
